Development of Thor: The Dark World began in April 2011, when the producer Kevin Feige announced plans for a sequel to follow the crossover film: Marvel’s The Avengers. Alan Taylor was hired as the director of the film after Kenneth Branagh, the director of Thor, withdrew from the project. Various people were being hired for roles in the production throughout 2012, and principal photography commenced on September 10th 2012 in Bourne Wood, Surrey. In October 2012, production moved to Iceland for filming to take place in: Dómadalur,  Skógafoss, Fjaðrárgljúfur and Skeiðarársandur. And in late October, filming began at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London.

Post-production
In August, Marvel Entertainment and IMAX Corporation announced that the film would be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX 3D format and released into IMAX 3D theatres internationally beginning October 30th 2013. The film's visual effects were completed by seven special effects studios, including Double Negative and Luma Pictures. The soundtrack was released digitally on October 28th, 2013. The film was also converted into 3D during this stage.
